IZANAKI and IZANAMI

Illustrated comic panel explaining the birth of the land in Japanese mythology. Izanami and Izanaki, the seventh-generation male-female deities, are chosen to shape the floating world. Using the Heavenly Spear, they stir the sea, creating Onogoro Island. The panel also shows the lineage of earlier deity generations.

When Male and Female Deities Were Born

The seven generations of deities are born. They are called “Kamuyo Nanayo”.

1st Generation
-Kuninotokotachi no kami -Deity of the Earth and Land


2nd Generation
-Toyokumono no kami -Deity of the Cloud

3rd Generation
-Uhijini no kami (male)
-Suhichini no kami (female)

4th Generation
-Tsunogui no kami (male)
-Ikugui no kami (female)

5th Generation
-Ōtonoji no kami (male)
-Ōtonobenokami (female)

6th Generation
-Omodaru no kami (male)
-Ayakashikone no kami (female)

-The 3rd to 6th generations are deities related to land and dwelling.

7th Generation
Izanaki no kami (male)
Izanami no kami (female)

Izanaki and Izanami creat Japan

Izanagi and Izanami stood on the Floating Bridge of Heaven and stirred the muddy earth with a spear.

Then, the drops that dripped from the spear hardened by themselves and formed an island. This was Onogoro Island.
