A five-panel illustrated comic depicting a scene from Japanese mythology. Izanami chases Izanaki from the land of Yomi. Izanaki blocks the entrance of Yomotsu Hirasaka with a massive rock. The couple exchange vows of death and birth, symbolizing mortality and life. They part forever, with Izanami becoming the Kami of Yomi, and the sealing rock also becoming a Kami.

🟢 A Tragic Separation of a Married Couple

The one who pursued him to the very end was Izanami, transformed beyond recognition.
Furious, Izanami cried out, “How dare you shame me like this!”
Izanaki blocked the entrance to Yomotsu Hirasaka with the Chibiki Rock—
a colossal stone so massive it would take a thousand people to move.

🟢 The Couple’s Exchange of Curses

With the rock between them, the two hurled curses at one another.
Izanami said,
My beloved husband, if you do such a thing, I shall strangle a thousand people of your land each day.”

Izanaki replied,
My beloved wife, if you do that, then I will build a thousand five hundred birthing huts each day.”

And so it came to pass that every day, a thousand people would die, and a thousand five hundred would be born.

🟢 The Final Divide Between This World and the Other

Thus, the couple was separated forever.
The passage between the world of the living and the world of the dead was completely sealed.

Izanami became the Kami of the land of Yomi,
and was known as Yomotsu Ōkami.

The Chibiki Rock was given the name Chigaeshino ōkami, the Great Kami who turns back the path.
